Keep observation, interpretation and evidence separate
A durable field note has three layers: what is visible, what it may mean, and which source or record supports that reading. This structure makes uncertainty explicit and lets another researcher reproduce the result.
Start with observation
Write down only what is physically visible before assigning meaning: shape, orientation, count, material, damage, text and relationship to the rest of the monument.
Add context
Use the inscription, date, cemetery section, neighboring family stones, local religious history and records. Context can strengthen an identification or show that a familiar-looking motif was used differently.
Interpretation is not identification
Record a tentative reading as a hypothesis. A familiar symbol can be reused by a different faith, organization, family or monument dealer.
Record uncertainty
A useful research note separates observation, interpretation and evidence. Mark what is documented, what is probable and what remains only a possibility.
Preserve the site
Do not move objects, apply substances, make rubbings, clean, reset or repair a marker without permission and appropriate conservation knowledge.
